My Books Marian Dunlop Teacher and Healer Valuing and Educating Young People Read Excerpts, Purchase Home |
Marian Dunlop was a remarkably balanced and integrated person, an educationalist, a prophet and pioneering advocate of contemplative meditation. Her life, 1880-1974, spanned the last decades of the Victorian era to the start of the present Northern Ireland Troubles. A graduate of Girton College, she taught English in progressive girls’ schools and could have become a headmistress. Instead in her forties she ran a Home School and found herself lecturing for The Guild of Health and teaching contemplative meditation which she had learned twenty years before from an American doctor, James Porter Mills. She remained single, devoting the rest of her life to her passion: the teaching and practice of Christian contemplative meditation, writing and lecturing and founding the Fellowship of Meditation in 1932. In 1950 she made her new home, Longdown, a meditation centre. She helped many to find inner healing through her meditations, letters, practical advice and sense of humour. The Fellowship continues and has groups across England, in Scotland and overseas. Her books are still available and continue to guide and inspire. Jeremy Harvey has pieced together her story from slim family sources, using her words where possible. He has talked to and heard from people who knew her. He introduces her teaching and books, and ends by asking how her faith and practice could affect the spirituality of the new millennium. Now priced at £5 - a bargain!
